Boynton High School, Camden Community Day & Alternative Programs
Principal – Michael J. Madalinski October 2007 - Volume 1 – Edition 2
Congratulations to student Jacqueline Lewis for being selected by the Boynton faculty and staff as the September Student of the Month. Students are selected for this honor by displaying positive citizenship and academic excellence. Jacqueline was notified of her selection via the school-wide video news on Friday, October 12. She was also given a recognition plaque, a Starbucks gift certificate and a backpack.
The Boynton Back to School Night will be held on Wednesday, October 17. The evening will begin at 5:00 with a barbeque on the central quad. Come for a hot dog, chips, drink and a cookie. At 5:30, there will be a general meeting in rooms 12 and 13 in which staff introductions will take place. In addition, more information about the Boynton School Site Council and the impending accreditation will be shared. We are all looking forward to seeing you on the 17th!
Boynton High School is the home for all of the alternative educational programs in the Campbell Union High School District. Along with the continuation high school, students who are enrolled in independent study, middle college and home and hospital programs register through Boynton.
Independent study and home and hospital students are referred into those programs from their home high schools. The Home and Hospital program is meant as a temporary placement while students recover from accidents, surgery, or prolonged hospital care. The Independent Study program can be long-term and result in a diploma. Students who are referred to Independent Study must recognize that they have a learning style that does not require much teacher support. Students complete the equivalent of a week’s worth of work at home. Generally, this is twenty-five hours worth of work. The students meet with the independent study teacher once a week to consult on the previous week’s work and to receive the work for the next week. Students who attend the District’s Independent Study program and who intend to graduate from the program receive Boynton High School diplomas.
As I wrote in the September newsletter, Boynton High School will go through a WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) accreditation this year. This process requires the school to conduct a self-study and write an analysis of our findings. We send this document to a team of educators, who will visit us from March 31 through April 2, 2008. An accreditation by this association means that a diploma at Boynton High School meets some very stringent criteria and meets the enrollment requirements for California colleges. An important part of this process is some participation by parents and students.
The students have been actively involved in the WASC process. Nine Boynton students spent the day with the Boynton Leadership team to discuss and re-write the school’s Expected School-wide Learning Results (ESLRs) which is the initial step in the self-study process. (Please see School Loop for a posting of the Boynton ESLRs) These students, who made significant contributions are, Victor Franco, Jessica Fuentes, Amanda Hitt, Daniel McFarlane, Lori Ramirez, Eddie Rennels, Travis Richmond, Norma Sanchez, and Scott Saunders. The entire student body also completed a survey to assist staff members in determining how we are meeting the needs of Boynton students.
As parents and guardians, you will have a say in this process. At the Back to School night, you will be asked to complete a survey of your own. You will also be asked to become involved in the School Site Council. You will learn more about this on Wednesday night.
