                  Principal – Michael J. Madalinski                   September 2007 - Volume 1 – Edition 1

On behalf of every staff member at Boynton High School, Camden Community Day School and all of the alternative education programs in the Campbell Union High School District, I want to welcome you and your students to a new school year.

I want to begin this newsletter by introducing myself. I am the new principal for Boynton, Camden and the alternative programs in the District. My name is Michael Madalinski. I have been the principal of two other continuation high schools, a middle school and briefly, an elementary school. I have also been an assistant principal and director of human resources. I have worked in both urban and suburban districts. I am very, very pleased to be a part of such an innovative school district and one that supports alternative education programs and the students who attend those programs. I am also very happy to be back working with students and teachers.

There is also a new dean at Boynton. Ms. Sarah Thomas comes to us from Leigh High School where she served as a dean. Ms. Thomas worked at Blackford and is very happy to be back in an alternative educational setting. Also new to Boynton is Ms. Gloria Lee who is teaching math. Ms. Lee previously taught in Fremont and at Escuala de Popular in San Jose. New to the front office staff is Ms. Jackie Smith who will greet you with a smile.

The remainder of the dedicated Boynton staff remains the same as previous years. Teaching physical education is Mr. Bob Slover. Teaching social science are Ms. Jennifer Hall, Mr. Gary Skalko and Mr. Gregg Witkin. Teaching English are Mr. Niklas Andersson, Ms. Dawn Petersen and Ms. Sandy Saidak.  Teaching science are Mr. Zach Mandell and Mr. Lyle Zaman. Teaching art classes are Ms. Elle Arnot and Mr. Jim BixlerMs. Erin Palmer teaches the foods classes and child development.  Mr. Michael Dopheide is the resource teacher and Mr. Chris Hodgkins and Ms. Sandy Saidak, teach independent studies.  Our hard working custodian is Mr. Guillermo Carrillo. The talented office staff members are Ms. Sandy Figone and Ms. Bunny Hecht. The Boynton counselor, returning for

her second year, is Ms. Katrina Rubenstein.  If your student is enrolled at CCOC, you will come in contact with counselor, Ms. Chris Carlisle.

The staff at Camden Community Day returns with dean, Mr. Jim Bojorquez and counselor, Ms. Janel Holquin. The teaching staff is composed of Mr. Dave Becker, Ms. Julie Coke, Mr. Michael Perry and Mr. Moises Santos. Carolina Lopez is the site secretary. Assisting teachers as paraprofessionals are Ms. Ana Hernandez, Ms. Rosemarie Loiaconon-Collins and

Ms. Victoria McClenan.

Boynton High School is forming a school site council. If you are interested in being a member, please contact me (Michael Madalinski) at 626-3404.  As you all know, the members of the school site council are in the position of making decisions that affect the overall success of a school’s academic program. This year, that is especially important because Boynton is going through the WASC accreditation process.

As written above, Boynton High School will go through the WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) accreditation review this year. This process requires the school to conduct a self-study and write a document regarding our findings. We send this document to a team of educators who will visit us from March 31 to April 2, 2008. An accreditation by this association means that a diploma at Boynton High School meets some very stringent criteria and meets the enrollment requirements for California colleges. An important part of this process is some participation by parents and students. As the year progresses, I will let you know more about this process.

The Teen and Family Counseling Center is sponsoring a Drug and Alcohol Prevention Awareness workshop for parents/guardians and teens, beginning on October 27. For more information call (408) 370-9990 ext. 12.
